                                                                              How to Make French Crêpes

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg of plain flour
  • 8 eggs
  • 1 litre of milk
  • 500ml of water (add some more if the batter is too thick: 1 litre max)
  • 250g of sugar (reduce the amount of sugar if you don't like your pancakes too sweet)
  • 1 tbsp of vegetable oil

  1. Put the flour and salt into a large bowl. Make a well in the centre. Add the eggs, oil and salt.
  2. Add the milk gradually. Then add the water.
  3. Pour a bit of oil into a frying pan. Use a clean cloth or kitchen paper to spread it around the base. Pour in some batter and swirl around the pan.

The Sound Collector

A stranger called this morning
Dressed all in black and grey
Put every sound into a bag
And carried them away

The whistling of the kettle
The turning of the lock
The purring of the kitten
The ticking of the clock

The popping of the toaster
The crunching of the flakes
When you spread the marmalade
The scraping noise it makes

The hissing of the frying pan
The ticking of the grill
The bubbling of the bathtub
As it starts to fill

The drumming of the raindrops
On the windowpane
When you do the washing-up
The gurgle of the drain

The crying of the baby
The squeaking of the chair
The swishing of the curtain
The creaking of the stair

A stranger called this morning
He didn't leave his name
Left us only silence
Life will never be the same

Where do you think the sound collector is collecting the sounds from?

What do Hindus believe about the creation of the world?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9yWwFWpbRo

Task: Create a comic/story board of the Hindu creation stories.

Hindu Creation Story

1) Before time began there was no heaven, no earth and no space between.

2) A giant cobra floated on the nothingness and asleep in its coils was the god Vishnu.

3) A sound (‘om’) began to fill the nothingness and woke Vishnu.

4) As Vishnu woke, a magnificent lotus flower grew from his navel.

5) In the middle of the lotus flower sat Brahma.

6) Vishnu commanded Brahma to create the world.  Then a wind swept the waters and Vishnu and the serpent vanished.

7) Brahma split the lotus flower into three. He made one part in to the heavens. He made another part in to the earth. With the third part he created the sky.

8) The earth was bare. Brahma created grass, flowers, trees and plants. Next he created the animals and insects, birds and fish. To all these creatures he gave the sense of touch and smell. He gave them the power to see, hear and move.

9) The world was soon bristling with life and the sounds of Brahma’s creations.

Read the instructions and make your own Anzac biscuits

These were the biscuits that Australians made during World War 1. They are still made today to commemorate the soldiers who fought in the war.

Ingredients

1 cup of oats

½ a cup of flour

½ a cup of sugar

50g of butter

1 tablespoon of golden syrup

1 teaspoon of baking powder

1 tablespoon of water

Method

  1. Turn the oven on to 160°.
  2. Lightly grease the tray with butter. Then the biscuits won’t stick to the tray when they’ve been cooked.
  3. Place the oats, flour and sugar into a big mixing bowl.
  4. Melt the butter and golden syrup in the microwave until it is runny.
  5. Mix the baking soda and boiling water in a cup. Take care that you don’t burn yourself.
  6. Add the water to the melted butter and then pour it quickly into the big bowl. Mix the ingredients together thoroughly.
  7. Roll the mixture into balls and place them onto the tray. Leave a small gap between each ball.
  8. Press them down lightly with a fork to make a biscuit shape.
  9. Bake them in the oven for 20 minutes until they are golden brown.

Reading

There is an important tradition in Australian Aboriginal culture of telling stories, these are called Dreamtime stories. The themes of the stories include: creation, earth, animals, faith, customs and traditions, plants and sacred places. These stories inspired lots of very famous Aboriginal art.

Read one of the stories below:

How the Turtle Got Its Shell

Long ago in the Dreaming, there was a turtle and an echidna who were the very best of friends. The echidna had a baby. They all lived happily together near the billabong. To survive, they had to hunt for food. So, every so often, when their supplies were getting low, they would go out hunting. They shared any food they caught.

One day, the echidna realised that they had hardly any food left. The echidna told the turtle to stay home and look after her baby while she went out hunting for food. The turtle said, “Yes, no problem at all. Please go out hunting for food so that our supply can be full again. I’ll stay here and look after your baby.”

Moments later, the echidna went out in search of food. After a while, the turtle began wondering what could have happened to the echidna as he was beginning to get more and more hungry. The turtle realised that he could not wait any longer for the echidna to come home so he decided to eat her baby. At long last, the echidna arrived back home. Immediately, she gave her food to the turtle.

“Where’s my baby?” demanded the echidna.

"I ate your baby. I was awfully hungry and couldn’t wait for you to come back,” replied the turtle.  The echidna told the turtle, “Wait here while I collect some stones.”  But the turtle did not wait. Instead, the turtle went out to find some speargrass. The echidna was extremely upset with the turtle. She began throwing the stones she had found at him. The stones that she threw became stuck on the back of the turtle. The turtle then began throwing the speargrass at the echidna. The speargrass became stuck on her back. The two animals did not stop fighting all day. The fighting finally stopped. The stones on the back of the turtle turned into a hard shell. The speargrass on the echidna became spines. After that, the turtle told the echidna, “I will go and live near the billabong, where I will never see you again.”

The echidna replied, “I will go and live in the country. I will never see you again either.”

So off they both went to live separately. They never saw each other again.

Questions

Why did the turtle eat the echidna’s baby?

Which word describes how the echidna felt when she realised her baby was gone: stunned, angry or sorry?

Find and copy the sentence which shows that the turtle was impatient.

Why did the animals decide to live in different places at the end of the story?

Wednesday 6th May

Good Morning Year 2! Let’s keep learning about Australia!

Geography

Now that we know where Australia is and some facts about the country, let’s look at human and physical geography:

Physical features are natural things and are there without humans e.g. soil, cliffs, sea and rivers.

Human features are man-made e.g. towns and cities, buildings and houses.

Can you think of more examples of human and physical features? Write a list and illustrate it!

Geographers can use maps to show some physical features of a country:

A vegetation map tells us about what the land is like and what grows or does not grow on it.

What does the key tell us?

Which part of Australia has mountain vegetation?

Why do you think so much of Australia is desert?

Another physical feature geographers study is relief. A relief map shows us how high parts of land are:

Which part of Australa (North, South, East or West) has the most mountains?

Geographers can use a population density map to show human features. It shows where most people live.

Where do the highest number of people live (look at the other maps of Australia – can you name some cities?)

Why do you think that most people in the country live nearer the coasts?

If you enjoy looking at maps, why not have a go at drawing your own Australia maps? Try plotting and labelling cities, showing relief or vegetation (remember to include a key!).

  • Look in outside spaces outside your house (if you can) and go on a minibeast hunt. Make a check lists, draw and name what you find. How many legs does your minibeast have? Does it have wings? Is it an insect?
  • Make your own minibeast fact cards and picture cards. Can someone in your house match the facts with the picture of the mini beast?

Reading

Read this text carefully and use your active reading skills (word – zapping, visualising) to help!

Minibeasts

Minibeasts are small animals that are found in places like gardens, rivers and houses. There are lots of different kinds of minibeasts such as spiders, beetles     and butterflies. Some minibeasts have lots of legs and some have wings.

In the Garden

There are lots of minibeasts to be found in gardens. You might see bees buzzing around the flowers. Bees have yellow and black stripes to show other animals that they can sting. You could also see butterflies gently flying with their big, colourful wings. You cannot find a baby butterfly because when they are younger, they are caterpillars. The caterpillars eat lots of food, and then build a special cover called a ‘chrysalis’, which they stay in until they change into butterflies. Butterflies can come in lots of different colours and sizes.

As well as creatures that fly, there are some minibeasts that slide along the ground and up walls. Snails and slugs both have soft bodies and live on the ground. Snails have a hard shell on their backs to keep them safe. Slugs do not have shells. They hide under leaves to keep safe. Slugs are seen as pests as they eat all the plants in people’s gardens.

In Ponds and Rivers

Minibeasts don’t just live on land but in and around water as well. One insect that lives near the water is the dragonfly. Dragonflies have four wings and long bodies. Some of their bodies can be blue and some are red. They fly very close to the water. They have very big eyes and can see things a long way away.

In Your Home

There are minibeasts that live in people’s homes as well. Spiders are often found inside houses and flats. They find small cracks and crawl inside to make webs and lay eggs. In the UK, spiders are not dangerous to people but people are often afraid of them.

Questions

Is this text fiction or non-fiction? How do you know?

Good morning year 2

It’s nearly the Easter holidays!

You could try making some Easter nests

You will need:

Equipment

a plastic bowl, a wooden spoon, teaspoons, weighing scales, 12 cupcake cases, a baking tray, a microwave, a fridge

Ingredients

  • 200g chocolate, broken into chunks

  Method

  1. Place 12 cupcake cases into a baking tray.

  4. Put the cornflakes in another large bowl.
  5. Melt the chocolate in the microwave. Make sure you let it cool a little before pouring over the cornflakes.
  6. Stir the ingredients together gently using a wooden spoon.
