St John's C of E Primary School

"Use your God-given gifts to serve others." 1 Peter 4: 10

Modern Foreign Language

Children in years 2 - 6 are learning Spanish. They have a lesson each week from a specialist Spanish teacher.

In Spanish, we have been learning to greet our friends and families, how to say and write numbers to 20, how to say colour names, and how to talk about what we like to do. We have also been singing Spanish songs and playing playground games.

Intent

At St John's learning Spanish is a liberation from insularity and provides children with an opening to other cultures. The teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes and learn new ways of thinking. Spanish teaching provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Implementation

The teaching of Spanish in Year 2 and key stage 2 St John’s follows the National Curriculum and is planned and taught by PPA Cover, an outside agency. Teachers identify specific pupils who need support or greater challenge and share this with the agency and its teachers.

Impact

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice) and asking key assessment questions to a range of children.
  • monitoring Spanish journals to check that planned content is covered.
  • measuring assessment standards against written evidence in learning journals.
