"Use your God-given gifts to serve others." 1 Peter 4: 10
Children in years 2 - 6 are learning Spanish. They have a lesson each week from a specialist Spanish teacher.
In Spanish, we have been learning to greet our friends and families, how to say and write numbers to 20, how to say colour names, and how to talk about what we like to do. We have also been singing Spanish songs and playing playground games.
Intent
At St John's learning Spanish is a liberation from insularity and provides children with an opening to other cultures. The teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes and learn new ways of thinking. Spanish teaching provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
Implementation
The teaching of Spanish in Year 2 and key stage 2 St John’s follows the National Curriculum and is planned and taught by Gramacri, an outside agency. Class teachers identify specific pupils who need support or greater challenge and share this with Gramarci, who also follow school school policies and liaise with Senior staff and the Spanish lead.

Gramarci joined St John's during 2022 /23 and launched a new curriculum. For this reason, during this academic year only, Years 4 to 6 are learning the same topics, with more challenging concepts lessons. This is because Gramarci feel that they need to lay a foundation through these topics in order for the children to be proficient and continue with the usual curriculum in these year groups in 2023 / 24.
