Mary and Joseph on the Way to Bethlehem (Portinari Altarpiece)

Luke 2:4-7 

 

This is a painting of Mary and Joseph travelling to Bethlehem. It is actually a tiny part of a much bigger painting The pathway looks rocky and dangerous and Mary has climbed off the donkey to walk for a bit.  

 

How can you tell from the painting how much Joseph cares for Mary?
