Respect  - Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding.

Aretha Franklin  (March 25, 1942 – August 16, 2018) was an American singer, songwriter and pianist. She started singing as a child when she sang gospel at the church where her dad was the minister. When she was 18, In 1960, she began to sing more secular music (this means songs which were not religious). She was signed by a record label and started to release lots of hits that were considered ‘Soul music’. Soul music mixes rhythm and blues, gospel and pop music. It started in the 1960s in America. Soul is energetic music singing of love, dance and life.

Aretha was known as 'The Queen of soul'. She sang for over 5 decades and was still performing well into he 70s.

On of her most famous songs is ‘Respect’. It isn’t actually her song! It was written and recorded by Otis Redding (named ‘The King of Soul’). It is so famous that many artists have performed their own versions of it. Here is a dance version by Melanie Amaro (a USA X factor winner).
