Music for the funeral of HRH Duke of Edinburgh 19.4.21

Monday 19th April

On the 9th April 2021, HRH Duke of Edinburgh died. He was the Queen's husband. He had lived an incredible life and this week's Collective Worship will look at celebrating his life and achievements. On Saturday 17th April, a funeral service was held in Windsor. It was televised so that the nation could share in the occasion. The music for this service was chosen by Prince Philip himself, before he passed away. Some of if had been specially written for him. Here is some of the music that was sung or played.

One piece is called Flowers of the Forest and is a Scottish folk melody. It was written to commemorate the defeat of the Scottish army of James IV at the Battle of Flodden in September in 1513. Here is is played on the bagpipes. It is usually only played at funerals and on Saturday, it was played right at the end of the service.
