Soul music mixes rhythm and blues, gospel and pop music. It started in the 1960s in America. Soul music often has call and response, hand claps, body movement and a strong vocal sound. Soul is energetic music singing of love, dance and life.
Aretha Franklin (March 25, 1942 – August 16, 2018) was an American singer, songwriter and pianist. She started singing as a child when she sang gospel at the church where her dad was the minister. When she was 18, In 1960, she began to sing more secular music (this means songs which were not religious). After signing to Atlantic Records in 1967, Franklin released many hits. She was known as 'The Queen of soul'. She sang for over 5 decades and was still performing well into he 70s.
