Day 7

Guatemalan Mother and child

Artist: Father Guilian

This artist grew up in America but his parents were Italian immigrants. He is a Catholic priest as well as an artist. Because of background, he says that the country you come from or your parents come from can often be seen as your spiritual home. In his art he wants to show this spirituality by painting people who are indigenous (country of origin) as saints or religious people. This painting is of a mother and child from Guatemala. Guatemala is in Central America and the largest population there is the Mayan community, (If you learnt about ‘Does chocolate grow on trees’ when you were in Year 2 you will have found out all about the Mayan people).

This painting makes the mother and child look like Mary and Jesus. How has the artist made them look holy?

(Clue -look at the gold halos above their heads).
