Subject Champions

At St John’s, planning and designing our unique curriculum is a team effort which involves the dedication and expertise of our Subject Champion. They continue to carefully consider what children need to know, be able to do and be able to understand within subject areas.

The role of our Champions in each subject area from EYFS to Year 6 is to ensure that pupils make progress through each year group, acquiring and applying key knowledge, so that they at meet the agreed age expectations in a subject. Our Subject Champions is to bring a subject to life for staff and pupils. They support teachers with subject knowledge and monitor children’s learning.

Monitoring Cycles

Throughout the year, our Subject Champions talk to teachers and children about learning. Through this process, they gather evidence (see below for examples from our St John’s Padlet Page) and identify areas for development.

An important part of this process is rooted in research by Alex Bedford in Pupil Book Study: An Evidence Informed Guide to Help Quality Assure the Curriculum, 2021.

This has given the team a systematic toolkit that enables them to focus on evaluating the curriculum, teaching and learning in a precise, evidence-rich environment.  This then helps with improving the impact of teaching and long-term retention of taught content.
