"Use your God-given gifts to serve others." 1 Peter 4: 10

Next Year

Dear Parents,

This is an exciting time of year for many of the children. Most of them are really looking forward to the holidays, and some are keen to find out who their new teacher will be. For other children, they find this time of year stressful and sad. They have spent months building up a positive relationship with their teacher and teaching assistant, and they are worried about leaving them and starting again. Other children are worried about the work being harder, or the rules being different.

The best way to support your child during transition is to listen to their concerns. Their feelings may be unjustified, but they are nevertheless real to them. Acknowledging them is important. Speaking positively about their new class and teacher is also important. If you talk negatively, or share your concerns over the change, then children will pick up on this and think that there is something to worry about.

Spend time with your child thinking about all the things that will stay the same: the uniform, the building, the other adults in school, the lunch hall, the collective worship. When they are worried, children start talking about how "everything" is different. The reality is that it's not everything- and for some children, thinking about the things that stay the same is really useful.

If your child is particularly stressed about transition, do come and talk to us so that we can support them.

Remember: Change can be scary, but it can also be great.
