Górecki – Symphony of Sorrowful Songs

Henryk Górecki was a Polish composer. He wrote this symphony in 1976. It is in three parts. The songs are sad songs, called laments. This song is the second part (called a movement). A solo soprano sings in Polish. This song was inspired by the words etched into the walls of a Gestapo prison by an 18-year-old girl during the Second World War. The words read:

    "No, Mother, do not weep,
    Most chaste Queen of Heaven
    Support me always."
