Working together: Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong

Ella Jane Fitzgerald was born in 1917 and won an amateur talent contest which launched her musical career. Her scat sound was a hit in the jazz world. Ella won many awards and sang with all the great musical legends. She died in 1996 and was nicknamed 'The First Lady of Song' and 'the Queen of jazz'.

Louis Daniel Armstrong was born in 1901 in New Orleans (where jazz was invented). He was an American trumpeter and vocalist and is one of the most influential figures in jazz. He has a really distinctive gravelly voice. You might recognise if from one of his famous songs ‘what a wonderful world’.

Ella and Louis produced lots of music together. They would duet vocally, and Louis would also play his trumpet. Here are a couple of songs that they performed together: 'Can't we be friends?' and 'They can't take that away from me'
