  • 19.5.25 VE day: 'Somewhere over the rainbow' & 'A Sentimental Journey'

The 8th May 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. This is called VE day (Victory in Europe Day). Over this half term, we will listen to music inspired by VE day.

    Somewhere over the Rainbow

This tune is taken from the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. It was originally performed by American actress and singer, Judy Garland. It has nothing to do with the war, but the film did come out around the same time that the second world war started. It has hopeful lyrics and a beautiful melody that people would have listened to throughout the war.  This version is taken from 'Judy', a film about Judy Garland's life, and sung by Renee Zellweger.

    A Sentimental Journey

The second song ‘A Sentimental journey’, sung by Doris Day, was released at the end of WW2 which made it an unofficial homecoming anthem for many veterans.
