  • 9.6.25 Respect for our world: The Flower Duet - Leo Delibes

The Flower Duet by Leo Delibes

This is a duet for a soprano and a mezzo soprano (a slightly lower female voice). It is taken from the opera Lakme. In this song, Lakme and her servant Mallika go down to the river to collect flowers.

It is sung in French. They sing of the beauty of the nature around them; of ‘the flower banks, fresh and bright... in morning light’. They pick Jasmine, and roses, and lotus flowers while the birds sing and the water shimmers.

The song has become famous as is often used in films and adverts.
