    Music of war and remembrance

    16th November 2020

George Butterworth was an English composer who was born in 1885. He wrote this piece of music in 1913, which was just before the First World War broke out. It is a piece of classical music played by an orchestra. It is supposed to put pictures in your mind of the beautiful hills and rolling countryside of England. It is called 'The banks of Green Willow.' It is a particularly moving piece of music as he was killed only a few years later, during the Battle of the Somme, in 1916 when he was only 31.
