    Mother and Child

    Artist:  Ku Bailey

    New Zealand – Maori artist

    Luke 2:7

This is a picture of Mary sitting cross-legged on the ground, staring down at Baby Jesus as she rocks him in her arms. The kete (basket) on the floor has water and a loaf of rewena (Māori potato bread). This is to remind people that Jesus is sometimes called ‘The bread of life’. When Christians take communion, they eat bread and wine and remember Jesus’ body and blood.

In the background you can see Abstract Māori patterns swirl around. This isn’t a painting. Can you tell how the artist has made the piece of artwork?
