There were no cameras around at the time of Jesus’ birth and so no one really knows what anyone looked like. Lots of artists through the years have depicted what they imagine in their mind. Often artists see the image through their own eyes and so reflect their own culture. Traditionally, images are often ‘Eurocentric’ and artists now are trying to challenge that perception. Here is Joseph Mulmba-Mandangi. He is from the Dominican Republic of the Congo. Can you see how he has imagined the nativity scene to reflect his own culture?
