Alec Roth (born 1948) is an English composer. Roth composed this piece of music having been inspired by a photograph of the same name taken by an astronaut on December 24, 1968, during the Apollo 8 mission.
In this piece, the choir is made up of 40 parts. This is unusual – you usually have 4 to 8 parts. In this piece, there are actually 8 small choirs all singing different parts as well as a tenor soloist.
This part of the music imagines seeing the earth from space for the first time and the awe and wonder that you might feel. The choir sings the Latin word 'ecce' which means 'behold'.
